This piece is studying the phrase ‘Delicate and tough’.
The delicacy is the material used (wood shavings) and the toughness is the shape of a cube. I think the cube (along with the sphere) is one of the strongest ‘looking’ shapes that we come across. The boldness of the cube make people look twice.
Made by compressing wood shavings in a 10” cubed box. No other materials or bonding agents were used to make this.

Decaying leaves are very brittle showing the ‘Delicacy’ very well; this was created the same way as the wood shavings.

Made of compressed saw dust, showing the delicacy due to the sides giving way.

This is my current project which I am developing.
I am looking at the Support that others give which balances ‘self’.
I have created 4 spheres; I chose a sphere as when it is on a flat surface only one point is supporting the rest of the form. I view the one point of contact is me looking after others. Therefore I have chosen people who are very close to me to keep one of the spheres with them where ever they go for one week and write down their personal thoughts on it.
The sphere is the same size as a tennis ball made by using paper mache.
This is a study of a street, i was trying to concentrate on the perspective of the buildings and the mark making to create an atmosphere.

This is an example of my Photography, i took this in Dartmoor whilst studying delicate materials for my Delicate and Tough project. Looking at leaves, moss, bark and wood.
